From Refugees to Royalty - The remarkable story of the Messel Family of Nymans
Digging Deep is a new series of in-depth sessions run by Book Worms* that get to the roots of the subjects of recently launched books and their authors.
The first of these sessions - From Refugees to Royalty - will be held as part of the Chelsea Fringe Festival online on Tuesday May 18th at 1900.
The book explores how the creation of the world-famous garden of Nymans in Sussex (now one of the National Trust's most popular properties) enabled the Jewish immigrant family of the Messels to integrate into British society and ultimately to marry into the heart of the royal family.
John Hilary, the author of the book and direct descendant of Ludwig Messel who created the garden, will be in conversation with Sarah Layton, My Garden, My Life Podcast to talk about the story of the family and the garden. The event will include video footage of the garden and also a chance to ask questions.
