Taking a Nature Poem for a Walk

2pm - 3.30pm
  • Community garden

  • Walk

Please join Johannah Barrett, poet and a qualified Clerkenwell and Islington Guide and member of CIGA, for a creative walk through the local urban and green spaces around Mildmay. Starting in King Henry’s Walk Garden, Johannah will guide you on a walk around local green spaces in the company of ‘A London Plane Tree’, a poem written in 1889 by Amy Levy. As we pause at each space, we will be able to enjoy, discuss and reflect upon the poem and its message about the experience of nature in London. We will also be able to learn more about Amy Levy, whose ashes are interred in a local Jewish burial ground, itself now a Grade II listed site of historical significance as well being rich in biodiversity.

Ticket information: 10 people max. Children aged 8 and over are welcome if accompanied by an adult. £5 per person

Location

King Henrys Walk Garden
11c King Henry's Walk, London N1 4NX, UK

Directions: The garden is off King Henry’s Walk in Islington, London N1. Take the turning on the left of the adventure playground, and follow the pavement to the metal gate right at the end. Go through that gate into the garden. On foot… It is a relatively short and lovely walk to the Garden from many local stations and key locations: about 25 minutes from Highbury and Islington, the same from Stoke Newington Church Street; be sure to take the quiet low pollution route via Neville Road and King Henry St. Less than 10 minutes from Dalston Kingsland Station; from Dalston Junction, the low pollution route involves a slight detour via Tottenham Road and takes a little over 10 minutes. The beautiful walk from De Beauvoir Square is about 15 minutes. By bike… The Garden is near 2 major cycle routes (but beware that diversions are in place because of the closure of the bridge on Kingsbury Road by Network Rail Cycleway 27: Bloomsbury to Walthamstow. CS1: Liverpool Street to Tottenham For the routes, see https://tfl.gov.uk/maps/cycle There is ample bike parking in the garden.

Nearest transport link(s): Buses 21, 30, 38, 56, 141 and 277 all stop close by (5 minute walk). Highbury & Islington is about a 25 minute walk away, or you can catch a 30 or 277 bus from Highbury Corner to Ball’s Pond Road.Canonbury, Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction stations are all about 10 minutes walk.
